Clearing members, futures commission merchants, and foreign brokers (collectively called reporting firms) file daily reports with the Commission. Those reports show the futures and option positions of traders that hold positions above specific reporting levels set by CFTC regulations. The aggregate of all traders’ positions reported to the Commission usually represents 70 to 90 percent of the total open interest in any given market. The Commitment of Traders (COT) reports provide a breakdown of each Tuesday’s open interest for markets in which 20 or more traders hold positions equal to or above the reporting levels established by the CFTC. Commitment of Traders (COT) charts are updated each Friday at 3pm CT.

The COT report shows how committed the large institutional “non-commercial” traders are to long or short positions within each currency pair. If traders are net short, the COT graph will show a negative position and if they are net long the COT graph will show a positive position. The COT charts also illustrates the rate of change within those long or short balances. It breaks down the open-interest positions of all major contracts that have more than 20 traders. The legacy COT simply shows the market for a commodity broken into long, short, and spread positions for non-commercial traders, commercial traders, and non-reportable positions (small traders). The total open interest is given as well as changes in open interest.
These categories include non-commercial, commercial, and index traders. The COT provides an overview of what the key market participants think and helps determine the likelihood of a trend continuing or coming to an end. If commercial and non-commercial long positions are both growing, for example, that is a bullish signal for the price of the underlying commodity. For example, traders are classified as non-commercial or commercial, and that holds for every position they have within that particular commodity. This means that an oil company with a small hedge and a much larger speculative trade on crude will have both positions show up in the commercial category. Simply put, even the disaggregated data is too aggregated to be said to accurately represent the market.
The video in today’s article was a live presentation given by Wade Hansen in 2008. Wade developed the COT report graph including the calculations behind its sentiment line. He has tested the system in the live market and on past data and will share some of his findings in the presentation. The COT report is released each week after market close on Friday. The non-commercial traders is the column you want to examine most closely. The commercial traders to the right are mostly hedging and will often be positioned in the opposite direction of the non-commercial investors or speculators.
JSI and Jiko Bank are not affiliated with Public Holdings, Inc. (“Public”) or any of its subsidiaries. Both the sentiment line (red) and the net long/short line (black) are important trend indicators. Short term traders may use the sentiment line to define what kind of trades they are looking for (long or short) based on the direction or trend of the red line. Longer term traders may only select trades that conform to the net long or short position of the black line. These can be an easy way to define investor sentiment and to understand the strength (or weakness) of the underlying trend.

The category called “dealer/intermediary,” for instance, represents sellside participants. Typically, these are dealers and intermediaries that earn commissions on selling financial products, capturing bid/offer spreads and otherwise accommodating clients. The remaining three categories (“asset manager/institutional;” “leveraged funds;” and “other reportables”) represent the buy-side participants. These are essentially clients of the sell-side participants who use the markets to invest, hedge, manage risk, speculate or change the term structure or duration of their assets.
